If you’re navigating the private school admissions process, chances are you’ve come across the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE)—a test required by many secular private and some religious schools for students applying to grades 2 through 12. (Almost all schools accept the SSAT as well, but this post focuses on the ISEE, which tends to be more commonly preferred in many urban markets, and especially in NYC where I’m based.)
While the ISEE can initially appear daunting, understanding its core components can transform anxiety into confidence. Let's break down what makes this exam so challenging, from its structure and question formats to its scoring system.

📝 What is the ISEE?
The ISEE is designed to assess a student’s academic skills and reasoning abilities. It’s divided into four levels based on the grade the student is entering:
- Primary Level: For applicants to grades 2–4
- Lower Level: For applicants to grades 5–6
- Middle Level: For applicants to grades 7–8
- Upper Level: For applicants to grades 9–12
While the Primary levels have only one Reading and one Math section, the Lower, Middle, and Upper Levels of the ISEE have five sections:
- Verbal Reasoning: Tests vocabulary and synonym recognition.
- Quantitative Reasoning: Focuses on mathematical reasoning and problem-solving; includes Quantitative Comparison questions on the Middle and Upper levels, where students compare two given quantities and determine if one is greater, if they’re equal, or if the relationship cannot be determined.
- Reading Comprehension: Assesses understanding of various passage types, including literary fiction, history, science, and contemporary life.
- Mathematics Achievement: Covers math skills with more direct calculation.
- Essay: An unscored writing sample sent to schools (though still an important component for admissions teams reviewing a student’s writing skills).
One of the biggest hurdles in the Reading Comprehension section is the range of passage types. Students must shift between text types quickly, adapt to unfamiliar vocabulary, and answer inference-based questions under time pressure. This section rewards students who can read with purpose and extract meaning efficiently—even from topics they’ve never encountered before. Familiarity with these formats and practicing strategies for different genres is key to success.

The ISEE can be taken up to three times per admissions cycle, but students are limited to one test per testing season. The academic year is divided into the following testing windows:
- Fall: August – November
- Winter: December – March
- Spring/Summer: April – July

Generally, students applying within a standard cycle take it once during the Fall season (by November 30th) and once early in the Winter season (by January 5th or so depending on school application deadlines). - Above Grade-Level Content & Advanced Concepts: The ISEE is structured to challenge students across multiple grades. For instance, a 6th grader taking the Middle Level exam may encounter concepts typically taught in 7th or even 8th grade. Especially in the Middle and Upper Levels, topics can include algebra, geometry, and data analysis—concepts that require both knowledge and flexible thinking.
- Problem-Solving Emphasis: The Quantitative Reasoning section focuses on evaluating how students use their mathematical understanding to approach and solve problems, often requiring logical reasoning with minimal calculations.
Because of this above-grade-level content, students aiming for top scores often need to learn and practice math concepts that go beyond their current school curriculum. Starting early is crucial to bridge these knowledge gaps effectively.

Admissions teams typically focus on percentile ranks and stanines, which reflect how a student performed compared to peers. Here's a simplified breakdown:
- Percentile Rank: This compares a student’s scaled score to scores of students in the same grade over the past three years. A percentile rank of 65, for example, means the student scored better than 65% of the norm group.
- Stanine Score: Derived from the percentile rank, stanines range from 1 to 9, with 5 as the median:
- 1-3: Below Average
- 4-6: Average
- 7-9: Above Average
Understanding this scoring helps families set realistic goals and focus on sections where improvement is most needed.
