One-on-one Middle and Upper Level prep from a team with placements at Deerfield, Groton, Andover, Exeter, and the top NYC day schools.
Kate Fisher Tutoring provides one-on-one SSAT tutoring for students applying to boarding schools and independent day schools, in person in New York City and online for families anywhere. Nine tutors on our team teach the SSAT. Programs begin with a diagnostic and cover the parts of the test that differ from school: analogies, above-grade-level math, the quarter-point guessing penalty, and the writing sample schools actually read.
The Secondary School Admission Test is accepted by nearly every independent school and is the test most boarding schools prefer. It comes in three levels.
| Level | Current grade | Scored sections |
|---|---|---|
| Elementary | Grades 3 and 4 | Quantitative, Verbal, Reading, plus an unscored writing sample |
| Middle | Grades 5 to 7 | Two Quantitative sections, Verbal, Reading, plus an unscored writing sample and an unscored experimental section |
| Upper | Grades 8 to 11 | Same structure as Middle, with content through algebra and geometry |
Scores are reported as scaled scores by section and as percentiles compared with students of the same grade and gender who tested over the past three years. As with the ISEE, no school publishes a cutoff, and the most selective schools look at the whole file.
Most NYC day schools accept either, and in the city the ISEE is more commonly preferred. Boarding schools such as Deerfield, Groton, Andover, and Exeter accept both but historically lean SSAT. Beyond school preference, the tests differ in ways that matter for individual students.
| SSAT | ISEE | |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal | Synonyms and analogies | Synonyms and sentence completions |
| Math | Two quantitative sections, same style | Quantitative Reasoning plus Mathematics Achievement, including quantitative comparisons |
| Wrong answers | Quarter-point penalty (Middle and Upper) | No penalty |
| How often | Several standard dates a year, plus Flex dates | Once per season, up to three times a cycle |
| Writing | Unscored sample, sent to schools | Unscored essay, sent to schools |
If the school list allows either test, we recommend a short diagnostic of each. Some students take to analogies immediately and struggle with quantitative comparisons. Others are the reverse. Let the diagnostics decide. Our ISEE tutoring page covers the other side of the decision.
Recent KFT admissions include Deerfield Academy, Groton, Phillips Academy Andover, Phillips Exeter, and Friends Academy, alongside Horace Mann, Spence, Trinity, Riverdale, Dalton, and Collegiate in the city. Full lists by year are on our results page.
Our vocabulary lists are organized by ISEE level, and the words overlap heavily with the SSAT. Use Lower for the Elementary and early Middle Level, Middle for the Middle Level, and Upper for the Upper Level.
Most NYC day schools accept both and lean ISEE. Boarding schools accept both and lean SSAT. If the school list allows either, take a short diagnostic of each. The SSAT’s analogies and guessing penalty suit some students better, and the ISEE’s quantitative comparisons suit others.
On the Middle and Upper Levels, each wrong answer subtracts a quarter point and a blank answer subtracts nothing. If a student can eliminate at least one choice, guessing is the right call. If not, skipping is. We drill that decision until it is automatic.
There are several standard Saturday test dates each year, and students may take the test more than once. Flex dates are also available through approved educational consultants and schools. Most families plan a fall sitting with a second date in reserve before January deadlines.
Scores are reported as scaled scores by section and as percentiles relative to students of the same grade and gender over the past three years. No school publishes a cutoff. Competitive ranges vary by school, and we walk families through the schools on their list after the diagnostic.
Spring or early summer before the application year. Vocabulary and analogies take months to build, and a fall test with a retake in reserve requires a runway. Shorter timelines can work, but they are not what we recommend.
Yes. Many of our SSAT families are applying to boarding schools from outside the city, and some from outside the country. We work with them entirely over video and schedule around their time zone. It works well.
We don’t publish rates because every program is custom and the scope depends on the diagnostic. After a conversation about your student, we provide transparent pricing based on the plan.
Tell us about your student and the schools on the list. We’ll respond within 24 hours.
